Founders Curmudgeon Old Ale

Style and Glass: Old Ale, Snifter, Shaker
ABV, Volume & Calories: 9.8 % in 12 fl oz. estimated at 200 C
Purchased at: Canal’s Lawrenceville, NJ for $10.99/4

Aroma: Very nice, oak, wine, leather, barnyard, hay, wheat, alcohol, sweetness.

Visuals: beautiful packaging, thick legs, ruby, iced tea, hazy, thin off white head, some thin lace.

Taste: starts malty, finishes malty, sugary, candy, delicious, sticky, long arc of flavor, bitter finish, grassy, some minerals, alcohol is well hidden.

Palate: high quality, smoother texture, longer muddy finish.

Overall: A winner. Like most anything by Founders, I’d surely have this again. Not my favorite style, a bit too sweet for me, but delicious. A bit expensive, but worth the taste.

Flying Dog Horn Dog BWSA

Aroma is sweet and chemical. Deep ruby body with thin off white head and no lacing. Taste is dark, roasted, thinner than expected. Something in the finish is off. Texture is like a scouring pad. Not very smooth or luxurious like many other BWSA’s. A shame really. Not sweet at all, which is a relief, but the chemical flavor is very present.

Starr Hill Amber Ale

RateBeer Rating, Style and Glass: 55. Brown Ale, Dimpled Mug
ABV, Volume & Calories: 5 % in 12 fl oz. estimated at 150 C
Purchased at: Wood River Grill and Wine Shop for $1.33

Aroma: not much, off. 2 out of 10.

Visuals: murky brown, thin off white head, okay lace. 2 out of 5.

Taste: carbonation, watery, very little craft. 1 out of 10.

Palate: water, quick finish. 1 out of 5.

Overall: A lot like seltzer. I would not seek it out, it was in a word, bad. Poorly crafted. 8 out of 20.
