Smuttynose Gravitation ABT Quadrupel

Smuttynose Gravitation ABT Quadrupel

Style; glass: ABT/Quad; trappist
22 fl oz x 8.5% ABV = 187 / 60 = 3.08 beers * 150 C = 462.5 calories (est.)
Purchased at: Super Saver, Pennington, NJ for $4.99

Aroma: cherry, raisin, wine, fruity, flowery.

Visuals: quirky but not unappealing packaging, ruby red body is brilliant, transparent and foreboding, weak white head thins to nil, little lace. The body is breathtakingly beautiful.

Taste: Very over the top sweet, slightly artificial in flavor. Candy malt, bright cherry sugar flavors, hops seem to be an afterthought, but they are there.

Palate: Tangy, tingly, highly carbonated, sharp, could cut through a heavy meal. Might be better with some age. Finish is acrid, bitter, and biting, but quick and fleeting.

Overall: A nice big beer from Smutty, though not my favorite from them. This one seems kind of  chemically influenced, somewhat overly sweet, and just a bit off balance. Some time in the cellar would teach it a few tricks, I think.

Smuttynose Smuttonator

Style and Glass: Doppelbock; mug, stein, stem glass
ABV, Volume & Calories: 8.5% in 22 fl oz. estimated at 400 C
Purchased at: Canal’s Lawrenceville, NJ for $5.89

Aroma: nice, syrup, maple, mold, rose, citrus.

Visuals: interesting packaging, iced tea, reddish brown, slightly hazy, off white long lasting head, intricate lace.

Taste: well balanced, high malt, medium hops, medium high strength.

Palate: high quality, spicy, scratchy, dry, longer drying finish.

Overall: A very well done beer, and one of the few doppelbocks I’ve truly enjoyed. If they were all like this, I might like the style more. I’d have this again, though it’s not what I’d call a favorite. High value for a well crafted brew.

Smuttynose Barleywine Style Ale 2007

RateBeer Rating, Style and Glass: 91, barleywine, snifter
ABV, Volume & Calories: 10% in 22 fl oz. estimated at 400 C
Purchased at: for $4.99

Aroma: sweet, nice, inviting, maple. 9 out of 10.

Visuals: deep but clear opacity, ruby color, limited clarity, tan, persistent head, intricate lace. 5 out of 5.

Taste: heavy malt, roasted, bitter, nicely crafted. 9 out of 10.

Palate: coating, drying, buzzing, long, strong finish. 5 out of 5.

Overall: Lighter and crisper than Old Ruffian. I’d have it again in an instant. Nicely priced, and great flavors. Get it. Well crafted. 18 out of 20.

Volume:22 fl oz
Glass: tulip
Purchased at: Canal Liquors, Burlington, NJ (Thanks Mike!)
Price: $7.00

First Impression: An amazing example of the style. Aroma is flowery, hoppy, and citrus. Visuals are a deep copper under a thin yellow white head. Visibly carbonated. Taste is a deep hoppy citrus & pine. Very nice example. I enjoyed it with a very spicy homemade chicken curry and some naan. Palate has a long beautiful finish. Tongue registers sweet, bitter, and salty. Second Impression. Amazing. An absolutely satisfying imperial double IPA.
