Thirsty Dog Hoppus Maximus American Amber Ale

ABV: 5 %
RateBeer rating: 76
Calories: estimated at 150 C
Volume: 12 fl oz.
Glass: pint, shaker
Purchased at: Issac Newton’s, Newtown, PA
Price: $4.50
Consumed at: home

First Impression: An average IPA alike. Chemical flavors hurt the taste. Aroma is a spicy citrus. Visuals are a beautiful amber body below a bright white head with persistent lacing. Taste is hoppy, chemical, and a bit soapy. Palate is crisp, drying, and acetic with a long bitter finish. Second Impression – not a bad beer, except that it tastes unnatural – many better beers exist for this purpose (hop delivery).

Aroma: 7 out of 10

Visuals: 5 out of 5

Taste: 6 out of 10

Palate: 4 out of 5

Overall: 14 out of 20

Bell’s Kalamazoo Stout

ABV: 6 %
RateBeer rating: 99
Calories: estimated at 160 C
Volume: 12 fl oz.
Glass: pint

Purchased at: Issac Newton’s, Newtown, PA
Price: $4.50
Consumed at: home

First Impression: A very impressive presence – a nice aroma, good head and rich flavor. Aroma is bitter, coffee, and roasty. Visuals are an inky black body topped with a tan head that is persistent and lacy. Taste is thick with espresso notes, licorice, and pepper. Palate is perhaps its downfall – a bit weak, with a medium finish. Second Impression – not anything close to a Yeti or a Shakespeare, but not a bad stout – far surpasses a Guinness. But for $4.50 a 12 oz bottle, I’d much rather have the Yeti.

Aroma: 8 out of 10

Visuals: 5 out of 5

Taste: 10 out of 10

Palate: 3 out of 5

Overall: 16 out of 20

Bell’s Oberon Wheat Ale

Glass: weizen

Purchased at: Issac Newton’s, Newtown, PA

Price: $5.00

Size: 12 fl oz

ABV: 6%

IBU:n/a

Estimated Calories: 160 C

RateBeer Rating: 82

Aural: quiet opening, little carbonation, easy pour

Aroma 7 out of 10

Intensity: medium

Balance: sweet

Impression: nice

Malt Aroma: whole wheat flour, nut, light caramel

Hops Aroma: dust, dirt, grass, coriander, lemon

Other Aroma: apple

Notes: A very nice aroma – not overpowering, but enjoyable, sweet, demure.

Appearance 4 out of 5

Color: amber

Clarity: cloudy

Head Retention: thin but persistent

Lace: poor

Notes: A very nice example of an American wit. Good color, nice yeasty cloudiness, like a sunset. Head is present but thin.

Flavor 8 out of 10

Intensity: medium

Balance: sweet

Impression: nice

Malt Flavor: wheat, sugar, rye, peanut
Hops Flavor: dust, rind, coriander, lemon, orange
Other: apple

Notes: A very tasty, if light, flavor. What many might call a good lawnmower beer, but by no means a killer beer.

Palate 3 out of 5
Mouthfeel

Sensation: creamy

Body: light

Carbonation: faint

Finish

Length: short

Intensity: faint

Balance: sweet

Notes: A crisp, quick finish is my least favorite part of this beer – it’s refreshing, but with a short lived refreshment.

General Impression: 16 out of 20

Craftmanship: very nice.

Freshness: fresh

Personal Taste: liked.

Notes: It was enjoyable, delicious and simple, but many other wits and belgian styles would be my choice when spending $5 on a 12 oz bottle.

Calories: estimated at 300 C
Volume: 24 fl oz.
Glass: tulip

First Impression: A very nice IPA, if a bit commercial. Aroma is very flowery hops, dust and mold. Visuals are a beautiful red – copper body with a bright white head that is persistent with nice lacing. Taste is sweet with a bitter ending – very well done. Palate is crisp, dry, with a long bitter finish, but not very strong. Second Impression – an amazing value – a fantastic IPA for regular enjoyment. Delicious, and done in the true spirit of the craft.
